Couples Therapy

At Connections Count, we help couples in need of support to strengthen or repair the bond between them. Couples often contact us for help with issues such as healing from betrayal, challenges around emotional or physical desire, managing conflict or improving communication. We can also support newer couples with marriage preparation or relationship enhancement work.

All of our psychologists have specific experience and specialised training in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, an evidence-based, attachment-focused therapy that is considered a gold-standard approach for relationship concerns. You can read more about the evidence base for EFCT here.here.

This can also be a great way to get to know us, or introduce your partner to the idea of relationship therapy in a fun, easy, low-pressure way.

Adult Family Therapy

At Connections Count, we believe strong, healthy families can change the world. When a family is securely connected and functioning well, the effect of this ripples out to impact not only the individuals in the family, but their community, their city and beyond. We love supporting families to create and sustain connection, confidence & joy.

We can provide support for parents at all stages of the family life-cycle to help with routine establishment, boundary setting, supporting development and agency in children and navigating typical family challenges. We also provide family therapy for adult family members navigating more complex experiences such as unexpected diagnoses, illness, grief, betrayal, separation or other changes that impact the whole family system or specific relationships (e.g., adult children and their parents; adult siblings; other adult family members wishing to work on their relationship with each other).

We’d love to help you build or restore a strong, healthy family. Let’s connect.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you believe? What is your philosophy of therapy?

While our individual therapists’ approaches and backgrounds differ, we all share a belief in the identity and intrinsic value of each person we treat. We seek to work in a non-judgemental, compassionate, collaborative and strengths-based way, using techniques and practices with a clear evidence-base, regardless of the type of therapy we’re providing or the reason you’re coming to see us. In working with you, we will seek to understand your specific experience, values and needs so we can support you in achieving your goals through therapy, in whatever way you are needing at this point.

Our head office is in Brisbane, Australia. However, as we offer online services, our therapists are able to meet you wherever you are, wherever that is, across Australia and beyond. (Some limitations may apply to services outside of Australia, to ensure we comply with all ethical and legal best practices. Our lovely administrator, Marie, can provide further guidance here if you are outside Australia and would like to connect with us).

Yes, each of our current therapists has over a decade of professional experience working in a range of settings and with a variety of presentations. All of our therapists are registered mental health professionals who have completed undergraduate and postgraduate studies in psychology, counselling or mental health. All are required to maintain their experience through regular professional development, including training and professional supervision. All of our therapists also have advanced training in Emotionally Focused Therapy  – a gold-standard treatment for relationship and family work.

Yes, as registered health professionals our therapists are required by their registering bodies to use evidence-based therapies in their practice. This means the techniques and strategies they use with you in therapy must have been shown in research to have a beneficial effect for the specific problems or challenges you’re bringing to therapy. No snake oil or quackery allowed.

When you book in with us you’ll be provided with instructions and a secure link to connect directly with your therapist at the time of your appointment via video-conferencing. We use Zoom as our video platform as it complies with all necessary privacy and security standards and works well on a range of devices. In the first session, your therapist will work with you to ensure a high quality video and audio connection, enabling clear communication, just as if you were sitting in the room together.

Online sessions also allow clients to save time and money on commuting to their therapist and increase flexible access to therapy as you can connect from wherever serves you best. Research has also demonstrated online sessions are as effective as in-person sessions in achieving therapeutic outcomes.

We are a privately billing clinic and each of our therapists charge different rates for their different services. Some services are eligible for a rebate under Medicare (individuals only), DVA or private health insurance funding (with a valid referral or fund membership). Given this, it is best to enquire directly with our administrator, Marie. She can let you know the specific cost for the services you require, as well as any rebates which may apply. Taking rebates into account, fees for our services vary between $140-$350 per session, depending on what you need.

Our code of ethics means we will never share anything you share in therapy with any other person without your written consent (there are a few important legal exceptions we’ll share with you before your first session, so you’re fully informed). If you would like us to communicate with another treating professional who is caring for you, we’ll discuss this with you and determine together the best course of action, based on your specific circumstances and needs. We’ll always seek to act in the way that best supports your therapeutic goals.

No. As mental health professionals, we work hard to follow all appropriate ethical codes and professional standards. We will never, under any circumstances, enforce any beliefs, practices or judgements upon you.

As fellow, flawed humans, we’re aware of our own imperfections, too. We seek to meet you where you are and walk alongside you as you explore your emotional and psychological needs through therapy.

At Connections Count you will be loved, respected and challenged to move towards wholeness, in alignment with your own values and worldview. We would be honoured to journey with you in support of your healing and growth.
